The Lightning Club at Sage Hill School offers a wide range of fun and educational events for middle school students throughout the year. From athletic camps to enriching academic experiences to workshops where you can learn new skills, the Lighting Club has opportunities for middle school students to learn, grow, explore and have fun!

Middle School Events

Round Robin Debate Tournament

Sage Hill Debate invites experienced debate teams of three middle schoolers in grades 6-8 to learn and try out the World Schools debate format. There will be format training, three debate rounds and awards. Lunch will be provided. Internationally winning former Team Canada Coach Aislin Flynn will headline the tournament and provide training and feedback to debaters through the day. Prior experience with debate is strongly recommended. Your team of three must be registered together, but teams may consist of students from different schools. The annual Southern California Regional Amici Madness is an all-day event hosted at Sage Hill School this year. At S.C.R.A.M., Junior Classical League students from sixth through 12th grade can expect an action-packed day of Ludi games, academic testing, Certamen, Impromptu Art, informative workshops and much more!

Hour of Code is an internationally celebrated event bringing together all students who are eager to try and learn code. OC Coder Sage is hosting its 3rd annual "Hour of Code Sage." We offer four languages including Java, Ruby, Scratch and Python, all taught by high school students. We will have two sessions in which students from 3rd to 8th grade can participate. This will be a great opportunity for any student who would like to try and get a taste of what computer science is all about.

Peter V. Ueberroth Gymnasium at Sage Hill School

This five-week camp will run on Sundays from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM in the Ueberroth Gymnasium (the "Ube") at Sage Hill School. (Note: On February 2, Super Bowl Sunday, the camp will run 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.) We will stress the fundamentals -- serving, passing, digging, and attacking -- and we will compete each session in mini games and 6-on-6 games. Current and former players, as well as collegiate players, will join the coaching staff in teaching and mentoring the players. Boys and girls, ages 10-14 are welcome. The camp is meant for both club-level players and brand new players.

Players should bring volleyball or running shoes, knee pads, and water bottle.

Baseball Clinic

This one-day baseball camp is designed to help players improve their baseball knowledge and playing skills prior to the official spring baseball season. The coaches have extensive experience at many levels including college and professional baseball. Former Major League Baseball pitcher Jim Abbott will address campers at the end of the day. No previous baseball experience is required.

The Sage Hill Holiday Camp will offers the opportunity for players to receive personalized instruction in all facets of the game. The program will emphasize technique, drills, match play strategies and conditioning.

Holiday Camp will be offered Monday, December 30th, Tuesday, December 31st, Thursday, January 2nd, Friday, January 3rd and Monday, January 6th.

Players should bring their own racquet.

Get ready for the Sage Hill Boy's Tennis Season! The pre-season camp will get players ready for tryouts with extensive instruction on technique, drills, match play strategies and conditioning. Camp will run Monday, February 3rd - Friday, February 7th, 3:30-5:30 p.m. Players should bring a racquet.

Boys’ Fall Baseball

Hague Field at Sage Hill School

This off-season baseball program is designed to help players improve their baseball playing skills as well as their physical conditioning prior to the official spring baseball season. The coaches have extensive experience at many levels including college and professional baseball. Student-Athletes will follow a weight training program, speed and agility training, as well as polishing their offensive and defensive baseball skills. No previous baseball experience is required. Playing time guaranteed to all participants.

September - Thanksgiving: 3 practices/workouts per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday). Off season games on Saturdays. Participants will earn Fall PE credit/waiver. After Thanksgiving – January: Optional 2 workout days per week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) for playing who do not play a winter school sport and wish to continue their conditioning routine.

Players should bring baseball gear and equipment.
